Arkansas Enters “High Stakes” Testing Era  - Posted on Monday, March 01, 2010

For many years, students in Arkansas have participated in the End of Course (EOC) Algebra I assessment.  Act 1307 of 2009 mandates the administration of a “high stakes” test in Algebra I.   Beginning this spring, the EOC Algebra I exam becomes a “high stakes” test.  This means that a student must earn a passing score on the EOC Algebra I assessment in order to earn their high school diploma.

Students will continue to receive the appropriate proficiency ratings (Below Basic, Basic, Proficient, Advanced) with which they are familiar.  The additional reporting of “Pass” or “Not Pass” will now be included in the EOC Algebra I score report.

If a student earns a “Pass,” they will not be required to retest.  However, the requirements for remediation have not changed.  If a student earns a proficiency rating of “Below Basic” or “Basic” they must complete the required remediation.  If the student earns a “Not Pass,” they will not only be required to complete the remediation, but, as previously mentioned, they will also be required to retake the test during a subsequent administration of the assessment.

The possible score combinations are:

Pass/Advanced – no further requirement for student

Pass/Proficient – no further requirement for student

Pass/Basic – completion of remediation requirement for student

Not Pass/Basic – completion of remediation requirement for student and re-test

Not Pass/Below Basic - completion of remediation requirement for student and re-test

Algebra teachers are committed to thoroughly teaching the student learning expectations for Algebra I.  It is imperative that students approach the test with a positive attitude.  They should be committed to fully utilizing the skills they have been taught in their classes and demonstrating their complete understanding of algebraic concepts.  Our desire is for every student to do their very best on this and every assessment.  For more information on the High Stakes End of Course assessment, please CLICK HERE to read a news release from the Arkansas Department of Education.

If you have any questions regarding your student’s assessment requirements, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s school to speak with an administrator or counselor.
