The Cabot School District has initiated a new notification system to alert families of weather-related school closings or other major events. This new mass communication system, SchoolAnnouncement, will allow the District to notify over 11,544 households by telephone, email, and text. Currently all voice notifications are entered by your primary phone listed with the school and no further action is required to receive alerts. By logging into the SchoolAnnouncement website you will be able to organize how you want to be notified, add other phone numbers (cell, work, babysitter, grandparents, etc) and even email addresses. Click here for step-by-step instructions guiding you through this process.
Many families will receive notifications as early as 5:15 a.m., during school closings, as to accommodate the many students and families that leave home early. Our number one concern is for the safety of our children. We make a decision for the District, but expect and respect that parents will make the best decision for their children and family. Therefore, we support a parent's choice to keep their child home if they believe the weather has created safety issues, even though the District may have elected to keep school open.
Whenever possible, school closing decisions will be made the night before and the District will initiate notification calls by 10 p.m. The news media will continue to be notified to assist in alerting families of school closings due to weather. Information will also be available on the District website.

Whooz-z-z Snooz-z-zing?
- Posted on Monday, February 01, 2010
Overstimulated, overscheduled kids are getting at least an hour’s less sleep than they need, a deficiency that, new research reveals, has the power to set their cognitive abilities back years. It has been documented in major studies that children, from elementary school through high school, get about an hour less sleep each night than they did 30 years ago. Children’s brains are a work-in-progress until around the age of 21, and much of that work is done while a child is asleep. Researchers have found that just the loss of one hour of sleep each night is equivalent to the loss of two years of cognitive maturation and development.
Many scientists theorize that sleep problems during formative years can cause permanent changes in a child’s brain structure. It’s even possible that many of the hallmark characteristics of being a tweener and teen—moodiness, depression, and even binge eating—are actually symptoms of chronic sleep deprivation. The standard tips on getting children to sleep better are: avoid caffeine; remove the TV/computer from their bedroom; don’t sleep on a full stomach; put up dark blinds and most importantly have consistent bedtimes and wake-times.
For information on how many hours of sleep are needed for each age group, click on the link below.
